What are the common reasons for tooth removal?

The goal of all dental professionals is to preserve teeth but sometimes it’s not an option.

Common reasons for extractions are:

Deep caries, which has reached so far into the tooth, rendering it hopeless.
Toothache after a root canal treatment that is not responding to the therapy
Accidents and root fractures rendering the tooth hopeless
Lack of space to allow for eruption (wisdom teeth)
Part of orthodontic treatment to make space for teeth
Severe periodontal disease with advanced bone degradation

How is the bleeding controlled immediately after tooth removal?

To stop the hemorrhage after extraction of a tooth, a gauze is placed over the extraction site and the patient is advised to bite and apply pressure which will allow for a blood clot to form. If bleeding occurs at a later time, just repeat the steps. It is important that you do not rinse your mouth in order not to disturb the clot.

How should I care for the extracted site?

It is important to follow your dentist’s specific instruction as it varies slightly for every case. Otherwise wound healing can be disturbed, delayed, and sometimes uncontrolled bleeding may occur.

What other precautions should I take after a tooth removal?

Do not apply heat during swelling after teeth extraction within the first 48 hours. Apply ice pack which will minimize the swelling. You should put a damp cloth between the cheek and the cooling pad. Depending on the case, exercising may not be advisable after a tooth extraction. You should abstain from eating completely for few hours after the procedure. Then you should have soft food. The goal is not to disturb the blood clot.

To avoid burns you should avoid spicy food. Also, smoking is not recommended for 24 hours as it delays healing and the likelihood of dry socket will increase. On the day of tooth extraction, you are probably better off not brushing the neighboring teeth until the next day.

How is tooth removal performed with a broken tooth?

In the case of a severely destroyed tooth, it is removed by uncovering the gum tissue for better visualization. Then a slight amount of bone around the neck of the tooth is removed. Once this is accomplished, the instruments can engage the tooth and remove it. This is also known as surgical extraction.

Why do you have to remove teeth for braces?

Before an orthodontic treatment, which should ideally be carried out in the child or adolescent age, the extraction of premolars may be necessary in some cases. This is often necessary in case of lack of space in the jaw so that neighboring teeth are too crowded. In order to create more space in the jaw, some of the teeth are strategically removed.
