What Are Mini Dental Implants?
Mini dental implants (MDIs) are titanium dental implants that are typically less than 3 mm in diameter, compared with conventional dental implants, which generally range from 3.5 mm to over 5 mm. Their smaller diameter allows them to fit into areas with limited bone width, making them an excellent option for stabilizing dentures and, in selected cases, replacing missing teeth in patients who may not be ideal candidates for conventional implants. Their narrow design often permits a less invasive surgical procedure and may eliminate the need for bone grafting in some patients.
Many mini implants are manufactured as one-piece implants, meaning the implant and abutment are a single unit. While this simplified design can make placement more straightforward, it provides by far fewer restorative options than conventional two-piece implant systems. Although mini dental implants offer several advantages in appropriately selected cases, they are not suitable for every clinical situation and should be chosen based on each patient’s individual needs.

Disadvantages of Mini Dental Implants

Smaller Diameter Means Less Strength
Because mini dental implants have a much smaller diameter than conventional implants, they have less surface area in contact with the surrounding bone and lower overall mechanical strength. As a result, they are generally less resistant to the heavy biting and chewing forces generated in the back of the mouth. For this reason, mini implants are not recommended for replacing molars or supporting large fixed bridges, where greater strength and load-bearing capacity are required. In these situations, conventional dental implants usually provide a more predictable long-term outcome.

More Implants Must Be Placed
Because each mini dental implant has a smaller diameter and less surface area than a conventional implant, multiple implants are typically required to provide adequate support and distribute biting forces more evenly. In many cases, four to six mini implants are recommended to stabilize a removable denture.
Placing additional implants also provides a degree of redundancy. If one implant fails over time, the remaining implants may continue to support the denture, allowing it to remain functional until appropriate treatment or replacement can be performed. This approach helps improve overall stability but does not completely eliminate the impact of implant loss.

Very Few Restorative Options
