Implant-Supported Partial Dentures
Implant-supported partial dentures are a removable option for replacing several missing teeth when some healthy natural teeth remain. Similar to implant-supported overdentures (snap-on dentures), they attach securely to dental implants using specialized attachment systems. Unlike conventional removable partial dentures, which rely on metal clasps around the remaining teeth for support and retention, implant-supported partial dentures obtain much of their stability from the implants.
Because the implants help support the partial denture, many patients experience less movement while eating and speaking, improved chewing efficiency, and greater overall comfort. Implant support may also reduce the amount of stress placed on the remaining natural teeth, helping preserve them over time. The number and location of implants depend on the number of missing teeth, the available bone, the condition of the remaining teeth, bite forces, and the overall treatment plan. During your consultation, your dentist will determine the most appropriate design based on your individual clinical situation.
Many of the attachment systems used for implant-supported partial dentures are the same as those used for implant-supported overdentures (snap-on dentures). These include locator attachments, ball attachments and other retention systems that provide varying levels of stability while allowing the partial denture to be removed for daily cleaning.
Because the attachment components, maintenance requirements, and long-term care are very similar to those of implant-supported snap-on dentures, we encourage you to visit our Implant-Supported Snap-On Dentures page for additional information.
